Gleiss Lutz advises Meyer Werft on Major Offshore Converter Contract for 50Hertz
Gleiss Lutz advised the Meyer Werft Group on the contractual arrangements with the transmission system operator 50Hertz in connection with a major contract worth approximately EUR 2.5 billion for the construction of a 2 GW offshore converter platform.
Meyer Werft, headquartered in Papenburg, has to date specialised in the construction of large and technologically innovative vessels and is one of the world's leading players in the cruise ship building sector.
Following a tender process, 50Hertz has commissioned a consortium comprising Siemens Energy and NEPTUN SMULDERS Offshore Renewables (NSORe), with the participation of Neptun Werft in Rostock, a subsidiary of Meyer Werft, to construct a converter system for the North Sea Connector 2 offshore grid connection project. The converter platform collects the alternating current generated by offshore wind farms, converts it into direct current and transmits it onshore.
The main structure, the so-called topside, will be fabricated at Neptun Werft in Rostock. This represents a significant step towards securing the utilisation of the shipyard in eastern Germany as part of the energy transition. According to 50Hertz, follow-on contracts, such as the award for the North Sea Connector 1, could follow.
The following Gleiss Lutz team, led by Dr. Tim Weber (Partner, M&A, Frankfurt), Prof. Dr. Alexander Schwarz (Partner, M&A) and Martin Hitzer (Partner, Gesellschaftsrecht, beide Düsseldorf), advised Meyer Werft:
