Gleiss Lutz has advised HORNBACH Baumarkt AG (“Hornbach”) on its acquisition of six DIY stores from insolvent DIY chain Hellweg. Hornbach plans to open the stores under the Hornbach brand in spring 2027.
The parties agreed that Hornbach will acquire the stores in Ahrensfelde, Berlin-Köpenick, Dortmund-Kley, Essen-Borbeck, Freiberg (Saxony), and St. Augustin. The transaction remains subject to review by the Federal Cartel Office and court confirmation of Hellweg’s insolvency plan. Hornbach plans to take over the stores in early December 2026 and convert them into fully fledged Hornbach DIY stores and garden centres based on its “project” concept.
Hornbach is one of Europe’s largest operators of DIY stores and garden centres and operates 175 DIY megastores and garden centres, three specialist retail stores, and online shops in nine European countries.
