Doing the groundwork
In autumn 2023, I stepped through the large wooden gate onto the picturesque campus of Trinity College Dublin, right in the heart of the city. That moment marked the culmination of nearly a year of preparation – during which I passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), secured letters of recommendation, and applied for scholarships. It’s definitely worth exploring not only German scholarship programmes but also those offered directly by the host university. It’s also important to start looking for housing as early as possible. Right after receiving my admission offer, I applied for on-campus accommodation and, as a backup, reserved a room in one of the many private residences across the city. I was very lucky and found my Irish “home away from home” right on campus.

Orientation Week offered a great introduction – not only to fellow students from all over the world, but also to around 200 college clubs and societies. Alongside the world’s oldest debating society – which regularly welcomes renowned guest speakers – there are a multitude of sports clubs, including cricket, fencing, rowing, sailing, diving, and much more. Law students can also get involved through the Law Society, the Trinity College Law Review, and the Free Legal Advice Centre. The campus itself is equally impressive, featuring a grand dining hall, a campus pub, and a sports centre with a gym, climbing wall, and swimming pool.
The range of legal courses was broad and allowed for an individual focus based on personal interests. A particular highlight was the discussion-driven teaching in small groups, where exchanging views and intensively debating the preparatory readings took centre stage. Writing the final essays also gave me valuable inspiration for future publications. In addition, the many recruiting events organised by law firms – including dinners and weekend getaways – provided great networking opportunities.
Away from academia, I had the opportunity to explore Dublin’s bookshops, sea-dipping spots and tech hubs, discover Ireland’s breathtaking landscapes, and learn more about its fascinating history and culture. The warmth of Irish hospitality, combined with its music and love of storytelling, made the experience truly memorable.

For anyone looking to combine an LL.M. at a top-tier university with a genuine campus experience in the middle of a dynamic English-speaking capital – at European tuition rates – Trinity College Dublin is an outstanding choice. My year in Ireland was one of the most rewarding stages of my legal training.
