Every year since 1997, commercial law firm Gleiss Lutz has enabled a highly qualified young lawyer to pursue postgraduate studies at a university in the USA or Great Britain. This year’s beneficiary is André Weiß, who has decided on a Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme at New York University. The scholarship is awarded in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service and covers full tuition.
André Weiß studied law and international economic law at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He passed his second State Examination as the second best of over 600 candidates in Bavaria. “In studying for an L.L.M. in the USA, I aim to expand my knowledge of the common law system in general and of US corporate law in particular”, he says. Over the past few years André Weiß has largely concentrated on corporate law and is now planning his thesis in this area. He intends to use his stay in the USA for comparative law studies as well. “Studying in New York will benefit my future career. I have already absolved various internships at commercial law firms and have always been particularly keen on cases in an international context.”
Dr. Ulrich Denzel, the Gleiss Lutz partner responsible for the scholarship and former holder of the Alfred Gleiss scholarship himself, says: “Professor Dr. Alfred Gleiss, the founder of our law firm, had an international focus from a very early stage. He cared deeply about understanding other legal systems. With this scholarship, we wish to promote cultural interchange in the Alfred Gleiss tradition.”
