German Law Firm of the Year – third award for Gleiss Lutz in a row

The British publication International Financial Law Review (IFLR) has awarded Gleiss Lutz the title of “German Law Firm of the Year”. At the IFLR European Awards on 20th April in London, Gleiss Lutz also received an award in the category of “Restructuring Deal of the Year”.

Following The Lawyer and Chambers & Partners, IFLR is now the third internationally respected publication to select Gleiss Lutz as the best German law firm of 2017. Dr. Alexander Schwarz, Co-Managing Partner of Gleiss Lutz, who accepted the award in London: “This is a great success for us. It shows that we have continued to strengthen and build on our position as the leading German full service law firm. We consistently offer full service, excellence, partnership and independence. This is what our clients profit from, and what convinces the market.

In the laudation, IFLR stressed Gleiss Lutz’s excellent work in restructuring and gave the “Restructuring Deal of the Year” award to the HETA restructuring. Gleiss Lutz supported the former Hypo Alpe-Adria in eleven civil proceedings against around 40 mostly institutional bondholders due to a repayment claim for a loan of approx. 2.3 billion euros including interest. This was a test case for the new European Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (EBBRD), conducted before courts that included the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Gleiss Lutz had two further nominations for “Restructuring Deal of the Year”, namely for the restructuring of A.T.U Auto-Teile-Unger and the debt restructuring of the Scholz Group, procedures in which Gleiss Lutz was lead counsel.

Gleiss Lutz’s restructuring practice is regularly involved in key restructuring and insolvency cases in Germany. The restructurings of Suhrkamp, Praktiker, IVG, Apcoa, Solarworld and centrotherm were also supported by Gleiss Lutz, as is that of the Rickmers Group, currently underway. The German Handelsblatt newspaper recently awarded its prize for “Restructuring of 2016” to Gleiss Lutz for the restructuring of the Pfleiderer Group, in which Gleiss Lutz also played a key role.
