Gleiss Lutz successfully advises Free State of Saxony in state aid investigation concerning airport financing

Gleiss Lutz has successfully represented the Free State of Saxony in a procedure before the European Commission concerning state aid for a major infrastructure project. The Commission decided yesterday that the public investment of some EUR 350 million for a new southern runway at Leipzig/Halle airport is compatible with the state aid rules.

The Commission had opened a formal investigation in November 2006. In yesterday’s decision the Commission approved the capital investment in the airport infrastructure under the “Community guidelines on financing of airports and start-up aid to airlines departing from regional airports”.

The case was handled by Ulrich Soltész (Partner, EU state aid, Brussels).

For many years Gleiss Lutz has been an important player in the field of national and EU state aid.
