Gleiss Lutz was named law firm of the year at this year’s Chambers Europe Awards for Excellence 2010, held in London yesterday. Following the Chambers Global Award 2007, the IFLR European Award 2008 and the PLC Which Lawyer? Award 2009, it is the fourth time in a row that Gleiss Lutz is singled out as the best German law firm.
This year, renowned London-based publisher Chambers and Partners honoured leading law firms in 22 jurisdictions based on a survey of clients and competitors. Chambers commented: "As one of Germany's premier independent, international law firms it is a prominent presence on the highest-profile transactional work, and maintains an impressive client portfolio of domestic and foreign institutions."
Rainer Loges, Managing Partner at Gleiss Lutz: "We are very pleased that our successful practice has once again gained international recognition. This proves that our strategy of our commitment to excellence, independence and organic growth is right."
In 2009, Gleiss Lutz further strengthened its position in the German market by launching an office in Düsseldorf and hiring additional partners for its corporate practice. The firm was also involved in numerous important transactions over the past year, including advising:
Magna on its bid for Opel
a consortium of private equity investors led by Silver Lake and Warburg Pincus on the acquisition of Interactive Data Corporation – the largest private equity deal of 2010 so far
Credit Suisse in connection with the takeover by the Emirate of Qatar of VW options held by Porsche
RHJ International on the restructuring of Honsel AG
IDS Scheer on the successful completion of its takeover by Software AG – one of the largest deals of its kind in Germany in 2009
On May 18 Gleiss Lutz won an additional award and was named "European Tax Firm of the Year" together with its Alliance partner Herbert Smith (UK) and Stibbe (Netherlands/Belgium) at the International Tax Review Awards – a distinction that recognised the firms’ exceptional international tax-related advice in 2009. The award confirms once more the success of the international cooperation between Gleiss Lutz and its Alliance partners on cross-border matters.
