Gleiss Lutz advises the Düsseldorf Airport in connection with comprehensive new financing

A Gleiss Lutz team provided legal services to the Düsseldorf Airport on a comprehensive re-financing as a consequence of the coronavirus crisis.

An essential component of the financial realignment is a loan of EUR 250 million within the scope of the “NRW.BANK.Infrastruktur Corona” programme of NRW.BANK, which was provided by several commercial banks. Additionally, the City of Düsseldorf and Airport Partners GmbH as shareholder had also granted the Düsseldorf Airport a shareholder loan of EUR 100 million in the summer of 2020. Furthermore, several commercial banks have provided the airport with an additional syndicated loan. These three financing elements will enable the Düsseldorf Airport to cover the increased need for operating resources due to the corona crisis.

The Düsseldorf Airport is the most important airport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and, after Frankfurt, Munich and the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which opened at the end of October 2020, is the fourth largest airport in Germany. In 2019, over 25 million passengers used the airport, and 77 airlines offered over 200 destinations in 59 countries departing from Düsseldorf.

The following Gleiss Lutz team acted for the Düsseldorf Airport: Dr. Helge Kortz (partner, lead), Dr. Andreas Kohlheim (counsel, both Banking and Finance, Frankfurt), Dr. Ulrich Soltész (partner), Christina Wolf (both Competition/Antitrust/State aid, Brussels).
