Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Bankkaufmann studierte Gerhard Wegen in Hamburg, Genf, Tübingen und an der Harvard Law School (LL.M. 1981). Er war von 1987 bis 2019 Partner bei Gleiss Lutz und ist seit 2020 Of Counsel. Er ist seit 1981 in Deutschland und seit 1983 im Staat New York und in den Southern and Eastern District Courts of New York, seit 2007 am US Ct. App. for the Federal District, seit 2009 am US Supreme Court und seit 2010 am US Ct. App. for the Second Circuit als Rechtsanwalt zugelassen. Er war von 1987 bis 2019 als Foreign Attorney in Brüssel zugelassen. Seit 1997 ist Gerhard Wegen Professor der Universität Tübingen. Er ist Life Fellow der The American Bar Foundation und Honorary Phi Delta Phi.

Er ist Mitglied der New York State (NYSBA), American (ABA), International (IBA) und Inter-Pacific Bar Associations (IPBA) (Council Member At-Large Europe), The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, deutsche und amerikanische Gesellschaften für Internationales Recht, International Law Association (German Branch – International Securities Regulation Committee), Deutsche Institution für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit (DIS), Schweizerische Schiedsgerichtsvereinigung (ASA), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCArb), AAA International – ICDR Panel of Arbitrators, SIAC (Singapore), DIAC (Dubai) International Arbitrator, KCAB (Korea) International Arbitrator, KLRCA (Kuala Lumpur) Arbitrator and Mediator, CIMA (Spain) Arbitrator, RCICA-Panel (Lagos), Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC) und Commercial Arbitration Court in Ungarn.
